Hayaa - Modesty

"Faith has seventy odd branches. The greatest of them is saying Laa ilaha ilAllah, and the least of them is removing something harmful from the road. Modesty/Hayaa is one of the branches of faith." -Bukhari and Muslim
Modesty in Islam is one of the principles of faith. It is freedom from vanity and showing off. It is decency and moderation in speech, manner, dress and attitudes and behaviour towards life. Modesty is shyness and humility this quality is not only for the females but for the males also. The true muslim is polite, modest, gentle and sensitive to feelings of others, they never say anything to harm or offend other people. The believers attitude of hayaa is deeply rooted in the nature supported by understanding its islamic concept.
"Hayaa brings nothing but goodness" - Bukhari
Every religion has a character and the character of Islam is modesty. Modesty prevents one from indulging into indecency and obscenity. If we lack modesty desires will take complete control of us and we will not hesitate to indulge in any type of sin. "If you do not have modesty then do as you please" - Bukhari
The muslim woman is beautified by her modesty in dress, manners
and guarded against indecent looks and behaviour by how she is dressed. Modesty is dignity, grace and adornment of a believer given by Allah. All the Prophets encouraged modesty.
Modesty can be the means by which ethics and morals are maintained and upholded in society. Modesty can be shyness from people and society but the key to modesty is knowing that Allah is aware of what you do, so one must refrain from acts which Allah forbids. Islam considers that modesty of a believer in front of Allah should be greater than infront of humans. The muslim is careful that their faith be affected by this one branch of faith - modesty.
May Allah give us all the ability to be humble, modest and polite, may He help us refrain from sin and make our faith strong. Ameen.
